Bunnell: A Shingle Maker’s Legacy

Origins and Naming:

Bunnell, a quaint city in Flagler County, Florida, has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It was named after an early settler named Alvah A. Bunnell. Alvah, a shingle maker by trade, left an indelible mark on the area. His influence extended beyond crafting wooden shingles; he also supplied wood to the fledgling rail industry in the region.

Incorporation and Growth:

  • Incorporated in 1913: Bunnell officially became a town in 1913. During this period, the first brick was laid in what would later be known as the Old Brick Road. This historic road owes its existence to the daughter of Isaac I. Moody, another pivotal figure in the founding of Flagler County.
  • Railroads and Cypress Shingles: Alvah Bunnell’s influence extended to the railroad system. He operated a cypress shingle mill around the turn of the century and convinced the railroad to make stops at his plant. The stop became known as the Bunnell stop, and eventually, the town adopted the name .
